Bahia Blanca

Fishing Vacations - Recreation and Leisure

Bahia Blanca is an important port city located to the south east of Buenos Aires at 687 Km distance. Although the city itself is located at 10 Km distance from the sea it is interlinked with other coastal cities and villages, among them Port Ingeniero White.

Bahia Blanca was built as a fortress for the protection of the herds and attacks from the coast. Eventually it gained commercial importance due to the construction of the railway in 1885, which connected the center of the city with other parts of the country, attracting many European immigrants whose descendants live there until today.

The city was visited by Charles Darwin during his research voyages in South America in 1833.

The city appears as plain descending towards the coast with some terraces of up to 70 meters height at the west from which there is a beautiful sight of the city. The coast has the form of a bay with white colored coasts due to the high salinity of the earth, from here the name Bahia Blana or White Bay.

In May 2007 was the last time that snowed but this is not a frequent event in the area, although the winter temperatures are usually below 0.

The climate may be described as "oceanic" with mild temperatures; sub-humid turning drier towards the west. The rainiest months are March, October, February and November with a total of 600 mm yearly. The winds are moderate being January and February the windiest months. Travelling from Buenos Aires to Bahia Blanca on National Route No.3 it is possible to appreciate the quiet beauty of the humid "pampa" with its infinite horizons. While approaching the city, the landscape changes into gentle slopes announcing the beginning of northern Patagonia.

Fishing

In the coasts of Bahia Blanca the usual way is embarked fishing among the islands. The zone is a real "dinning room" for the marine fauna, rich in mollusks, crustaceans and small fish which are the main food for the bigger predators, permanent visitors of the bay. The fishing area is divided in three: Bahia Blanca, Bahia Falsa and Bahia Verde, each one with the special species and the practice of fishing techniques.
