Bird Watching Vacation Magellan Penguins
Bird Watching Vacation - Argentina Beach of Punta Tombo
Punta Tombo is a protected area located at the south of the city of Trelew in the Province of Chubut. Geographically it is a narrow strip of land entering the ocean which is inhabited all along by an enormous quantity of Magellan penguins (Spheniscus Magellanicus) nesting in its coasts.
This natural reserve is the most important Magellan penguin colony within Patagonia, having about half million penguins coming there to nest and breed. They stay in the area from September to March and the best time to come and visit is during the month of November when their babies can be observed.
This trip can be an extraordinary bird watching vacation, as the area is also inhabited by other species of sea birds.
The scenery waiting for the visitor after entering the gate of the reserve is astonishing. There is a huge colony of penguins dispersed over the whole area. The area can be traveled along a winding road which allows the observation of the birds and the "caves" in which the birds nest – these are excavations made by the birds among the bushes.
The main attraction of this reserve is that the visitor can observe the birds and their habits by walking around. There is an area where descending from the car is permitted and the excursion is continued by foot, along special paths with informative signs explaining about the species of animals observed. The spectacle is incredible and it can only be experienced by being there.
Warning! The place is devoted to the preservation of the species in their natural habitat and it is forbidden to touch them. Magellan Penguins are not aggressive in nature but they can attack in self-defense.
Not only penguins can be found here. There are other animals that can be found among the penguins such as ostriches, guanacos, foxes, martinetas (species of tinamou), and Patagonian hares. The coast is inhabited also by a diversity of sea birds like seagulls and cormorants and is visited by dolphins and orcas.
It is important to note that the natural reserve is closed from April to September (during the winter months).
How to get there?
