Fishing Vacation at Bahia San Blas

The fishing vacation resort of Bahia San Blas in the Argentine coast is known nationally and internationally as " The Paradise of the Fishermen " since it offers the ideal conditions for the lovers of this sport.

The natural conditions prevailing in the area turn the bay into a recreation and sports beach to enjoy the perfect fishing vacation, ecotourism as well as the local scenery and history. The bay is visited by tourists from all over the country and abroad. So much for the different arboreal original species that the bay region lodges in its forests as for the animal nature reserves in its shores.

One of the main new tourist offers is the photographic tour Banco Culebras with more than 200 species of trees and sightseeing of marine lions. The local biologists call it the "incubator". Due to the geographical characteristics, the marine depths and the climate, the region has become a nature reserve of protected species. Among them is the "white dolphin" of a smaller size than the known dolphins, a unique species in the world and in danger of extinction.

Bahia San Blas is a zone of protection for migratory species. Due to the environmental characteristics of the coast, it becomes an area suitable for biodiversity development. This is the nesting and migration zone of beach birds, such as sixty percent of the global population of Gull of Olrog (Larus atlanticus), considered a vulnerable species on a global scale. This is also the area of reproduction of fish and marine invertebrates, many of them of high ecological and commercial value. The bay is the only habitat and area of reproduction known about the Franciscan dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei), at present one most threatened cetaceans in the Southern Atlantic Ocean.

Bahia San Blas was declared a Nature Reserve remaining prohibited the fishing in all his variants with exception of sport fishing and competitions.

History and Myths

Slightly studied and less well-known is the history of Bahia San Blas. Rich in anecdotes and myths, the bay has witnessed two centuries of local national history and legends.

It is told that corsairs and pirates made use of these coasts as moorings and deposit of merchandises and treasures, at the same time that they supplied themselves with local products. This was about the end of the 18th century.

Based on imagination more than memory, for example, is the history of a German ship that at the beginning of the 20h century arrived at the beaches of Bahia San Blas carrying aboard a seriously sick crew who died shortly in this place. This story has perhaps its origin in three crosses found in the "Cemetery of the Navigators". Although these three graves date of beginning of century the dates of the deceases do not coincide and belong to a doctor, to a young woman and to a man who died in the place but who could have been just passers by.

Location and Geography

On National Route Nº 3, at 980 km from Buenos Aires, capital of the Republic Argentina, one gains access to the most ancient population of the Patagonia - Carmen de Patagones.

The biggest island of the bay is Isla del Jabali, in addition to smaller ones such as Isla de los Césares, Isla del Sur, Flamenco and Gama. Isla del Jabali is the only one populated and the main settlements are Puerto Wassermann and Pueblo Mulhall.

The Jabali Island is separated from the continent by two narrow stripes of sea forming a half-moon. Its sizes are 15 kilometers long as 6 kilometers wide approximately, with an area of 6000 hectares. Bahia San Blas welcomes its visitors with a bridge leading the way to the "fishing vacation paradise".

Recreation and Leisure Activities

This seaside resort is the most crowded of the south of the province of Buenos Aires, South of Bahia Blanca. The coast offers places of deep waters for fishing and wide undulated, softly sloped beaches for rest such as La Rebeca beach.

Besides fishing vacations this is also the perfect recreation and leisure resort for the practice of aquatic sports and camping.

February is the month of the fishing festival with contests and winning awards. The most exciting adventure of Bahia San Blas is the fishing of sharks.

September 24 is the day of the Patronal Celebration of Virgen La Merced.
