Prehistory at Pehuen Co

At first sight Pehuen Co is a beautiful beach where the forest and the sea coexist in harmony. At second glance it is possible to discover that this location, near to Bahia Blanca, hoards one of the most important Paleontology deposits of Argentina.

Pehuen-Co is one of the prettiest and intimate beach resorts of the Argentine coast. At few kilometers from Bahia Blanca, where the "belly" of the province Buenos Aires ends, are the wide sandy beaches regaining all their solitude at early morning and late evening. No more sounds that the sea and the birds, and no more than the occasional walkers who leave their last traces in the sand.

Among sandy streets and some curiosities as the “ship house ” – a rare construction that imitates exactly the structure of a ship –. The inhabitants of Patagonia and local farmers of the interior of the province spend their summer vacations. This offers the perfect opportunity to meet the true atmosphere of the place.

The interesting side of Pehuen Co exceeds the delights of its extraordinary beaches. This portion of coast reveals a transparent window to the most remote past of these lands. And like so many other times, the discovery was a fruit of a coincidence.

Fossil Traces

These are a layer of Paleontology findings located at 2,500 meters East of Pehuen-Co. The fossil traces, of 12,000 years of antiquity, are printed on the platform of graze of the beach, in the clay-slimy layers that are covered partially by the high tides. The layer was discovered in October 1986, by accident after strong storm. The deposits are particularly valuable since they reveal information about the ambience conditions of the geologic past, and they constitute a testimony in situ of the behavior and activities of ancient animals.

Pehuen Co has been declared of high Paleontology importance by the Senate of the province of Buenos Aires.

Thousands of Years Ago…

In Pehuen Co time is measured in much more than centuries. It is necessary to count millennia if one wants to reconstruct the time when this portion of the coast was a plane covered with shrubs and grasslands, wrapped in a cold and dry climate.

The time is the Pleistocene, approximately 12 thousand years ago. The sea did not reach the current line. Next to the coast, the rain formed lagoons where the animals gathered. Those were the biggest species of prehistoric fauna in this part of the Argentina. Along with them were also flamingoes, guanacos and ducks.

The apparent freshness of the traces that remained makes it is difficult to believe that between that daily scene of the past and today lay at least twelve millenniums.

The climatic changes reduced the rains, and with the absence of precipitations the lagoons turned into mud where the last traces dried off, until the sea, in its eternal swaying, covered them up for eternity.

The traces were found by accident in 1986 by Dr. Teresa Manera de Bianco of Universidad Del Sur.

Visitors can approach the findings accompanied by guides, who answer questions and explain how to take care of the coastal area where the traces are printed.
